Zahura Sultana: Here and Now

07/08/22 - 11/08/22

This exhibition presents a new body of work, which explores the correlation between human feelings and the expressive shapes and lines of dried flowers.

Zahura is an abstract painter, who has always painted intuitively and instinctively. Instead of representing the visual reality around her, she creates art which represents her own feelings and emotions. For this exhibition, Here and Now, she explores a different approach by using dry flowers as a starting point for her work.

In addition to final pieces, the artist will also be showcasing her experimental and developmental work. These sketches and objects help inform Zahura’s practice and assist her in making her ‘final’ pieces. The show will feature her sketchbooks, two twenty metre rolls of charcoal sketches and expressive oil paintings, resolved paintings on canvas, and dried tulips and lilies that will be displayed throughout the exhibition.

Zahura is drawn to the dry flowers due to their changing shape and form over time. They express beauty and elegance and are a metaphor for human life for her. By abstracting their forms and lines in her work, they represent the artist’s own emotional landscapes and the experience of loss.
