MISSIVE: Alex March Solo Show
10th - 12th April
Missive is a collection of works by collage artist and painter Alex March. It includes new paintings and her 365 projects of collages; a collage a day, every day for 2022. These small postcard collages are shown here for the first time together, allowing the artist and the audience to track themes, repetitions, and rhythms throughout the year. March’s work draws on classical art history, the Hollywood golden age, and the studio nude. Themes of the muse, the goddess, the model, and the object of the gaze interweave throughout this year-long endurance project.
Alex March is a working class London-based artist originally from the North of England. She paints in oils and watercolours, makes drawings, collage and short films. Projects include; ‘Torture The Women (The China Cupid)’ 2013/14, a short film composed of the Hollywood screen tests for Alfred inspired by mother artists, of National Gallery postcards depicting the Virgin and Child with Mary redacted. She also teaches.
March was director of ArtLacuna Space, a project, gallery and studio space in South London. She has exhibited in Beijing, China, Brukenthal National Museum, Romania, at venues in London and throughout the UK and has screened at the ICA, and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. She graduated from Wimbledon College of Art in 2011 with a Masters in Fine Art. She featured in the Catlin Guide 2012, a guide to the 40 most promising UK graduates, was shortlisted for the Jealous Graduate Print Prize and the Future Map 11 Prize.
